Just beyond the shoreline of Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes National Park is full of surprises. It’s not just dunes; it also has forests, wetlands, prairies, and over 15 miles of beach to wander. You’ll feel at home here if you love trails, sunsets, and a little luxury between adventures — hike, swim, or paddle. Or just breathe deep and let nature do its thing. This place has a way of grounding you.
Hike the Dune Trails
Indiana Dunes National Park has over 50 miles of trails, and each mile offers something different for your trek. Some wind through black oak savannas and pine groves. Others lead you up steep dunes with views of Lake Michigan.
Try the Trail 9 loop. It’s a local favorite. Love an early morning hike? You’ll catch the sunlight filtering through the trees. You’ll also hear birdsong along the way, so bring your binoculars. Keep your eyes out for native wildflowers. If you bring your camera or smartphone, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for a frame-worthy (or Instagram-worthy) moment.
Expect to work up a sweat, take your time, and soak in the sounds of nature. Enjoy being out there together. This isn’t just a walk; it’s time together, so plan to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and enjoy the moment.
Swim at the Beach
Planning your visit during warmer months? The beaches are calling, and they’ve got your number.
In truth, though, there’s nothing like a cool dip after a hot hike. And Lake Michigan’s water fits the bill. It’s crisp, clear, and inviting. West Beach is a top pick, with lifeguards and plenty of space to spread out. Showers and changing areas make it easy to stay all day.
Indiana Dunes may be in Indiana, but they rival the best Michigan beaches across the lake. Prefer something quieter? Porter and Kemil Beaches are smaller and more laid-back. Both are perfect for couples wanting space to relax.
Climb the 3 Dune Challenge
Feeling bold? The 3 Dune Challenge is just 1.5 miles long but packs a punch. You’ll climb the tallest dunes in the park: Mt. Jackson, Mt. Holden, and Mt. Tom; the tallest tops out at 192 feet.
It’s steep and sandy, but the lake views make it all worth it. Take it slow, laugh through the challenging parts, and remember to hydrate often. A high-five at the top is a sweet finish. You’ll have tired legs but big smiles. Snap a photo at the summit; it’s tradition.
Bike the Calumet Trail
One of our favorite ways to explore Indiana Dunes National Park is to hop on a bike and ride. We love the Calumet Trail. It’s flat and perfect for most riders.
The Calumet trail follows the park’s northern edge, linking with other trails and beaches. That way, it’s almost like a ‘choose your own adventure’ trip. You’ll cruise past plenty of shaded and wooded spots as well as wide-open meadows. There are also a few quiet places for an intimate picnic for two.
Trail highlights:
- Crushed limestone surface
- 9.1 miles long
- It runs between Mount Baldy and Mineral Springs Road
- Connects to several trails and beaches
Pack snacks. Enjoy the views. And stop wherever the trail invites you.
Watch a Lake Michigan Sunset
Want a tip? Check the weather before sunset. Clear skies mean bold colors, but even a few clouds can turn the sky into a watercolor masterpiece. Bring a light jacket, especially if you’re staying a while. The temperature drops fast after dusk.
Evenings bring a certain kind of magic — the kind that lingers. The sky turns gold, orange, and blue as the sun drops over Lake Michigan. It makes you stop, take a breath, and just watch.
West Beach and Dunbar Beach are two favorite spots to watch the golden sun sink into the deep blue horizon. Bring a blanket and a picnic basket.
Had an afternoon of wine tasting? This is the perfect way to wind down. The lake quiets, and the breeze softens. You’ll head home with sandy feet and a memory you’ll hold onto. Make it even better with a cozy hoodie and some chocolate.
Go Birding with a Guide
Love birds? Or are you just looking for a thoughtful way to explore? Indiana Dunes National Park is one of the top five U.S. parks for bird diversity. Birders have spotted more than 350 species here.
The park sits at Lake Michigan’s southern tip, a prime migration spot. Spring and fall are especially lively.
The Indiana Dunes Birding Festival draws birders from across the region each May. Join a guided walk or hike, or discuss the different migratory birds and habitats. Learn from the locals. But don’t forget your binoculars. If you’re a beginner, no worries — the guides are great at helping first-timers feel right at home.
Picnic at West Beach
West Beach is a spot that makes you want to linger. It’s calm and ideal for a relaxed lakeside meal. You’ll find eight covered shelters nearby (yes, they’re reservable and wheelchair accessible), plus restrooms and trails.
Grab lunch from one of the Union Pier restaurants — like David’s Delicatessen, Whistle Stop Grocery, or Black Currant Bakehouse — and spread out a blanket. The park prohibits glass and open flames, so keep it simple: shade, shoreline, and a little something tasty. That’s a date. Bonus points if you bring a board game.
Check Out Historic Chellberg Farm
Step into a quieter time at Chellberg Farm, a 19th-century homestead in the park. Swedish immigrants started farming here in the 1870s. Today, the barnyard still has chickens, turkeys, and even a few friendly cows.
Visit during early spring to catch maple sugaring season. Then, return in the fall for the harvest celebration.
Paddle the Little Calumet River
Looking for something mellow? Paddle the Little Calumet River. The current is gentle, and the views are fantastic.
Start on the quiet side of Indiana Dunes National Park. You might spot a heron, a deer, or a turtle lounging on a log. Spring brings wildflowers along the banks. Watch for kingfishers darting over the water; they’re quick!
Launch from the Heron Rookery area. Check water levels before heading out, and enjoy the ride.
Take a Guided Nature Walk
A guided walk in Indiana Dunes National Park turns an ordinary trail into something new.
What You Need:
- Comfortable shoes
- Binoculars
- Curiosity
Walks run year-round and are often free. Some focus on birds. Others on plants or geology. You’ll never look at the woods the same way again. Ask questions as you go. The guides love sharing insider nature trivia.
Cowles BOG is a really different ecosystem from the rest of the park. Acres of wild lupines during June and wild blueberries in July. And if you’d like more details, our innkeepers, Julie and Eric, can tell you more about the bog and surrounding area from firsthand experience.
