You’ll Love These Dog-Friendly Places in Southwest MI

Looking for the best dog-friendly places in Southwest Michigan? If you’re nodding, you’re in the right spot. This corner of the Midwest bursts with hiking trails, breezy beaches, small towns, and pet-friendly patios just one hour from Chicago.

Many welcome your furry sidekick with open arms. No matter the length of your stay, you and your pup will find plenty of tail-wagging adventures minutes from our property.

At Goldberry Woods, we offer a luxury farm resort immersed in nature. Think sandy paws on the shoreline and quiet woodland walks — Harbor Country is a joy for dogs and their people alike, so pack your bags and let the fun begin!

Hike Warren Dunes Trails

One of our top recommendations for go-to places is Warren Dunes State Park. It’s close by and filled with some of the best beaches in Southwest Michigan. The park also offers miles of sandy trails winding through dunes, forests, and shady ravines.

Warren Woods State Park is the last standing Beech-Maple Climax forest in the state and is called a primeval forest due to its significant spring woodland flowers.  Check it out with your pooch.

If you’re looking for a challenge, Tower Hill is a bit of a leg-burner, but the views of Lake Michigan are well worth the climb. Your dog can come along on a leash, even on designated beachy spots. Warren Dunes offers six miles of trails and a 2.5-mile stretch of dog-friendly beach north of the swim area.

Looking for more? Travel farther south to Indiana Dunes National Park. Dogs are welcome on most trails and along the shoreline. Between both parks, you’ve got plenty of space to roam, sniff, and splash.

Dine Outdoors at Emma Hearth and Market

Few things satisfy, like a great meal after a morning of beachy walks, happy barks, and tail wags. Check out Emma Hearth and Market — one of our top recs for dog-friendly places to grab lunch or dinner. Fresh, local food and a relaxed atmosphere set the tone. And their outdoor patio rolls out the welcome mat for pups. This place is minutes from Weko Beach, making it a convenient stop with a great view.

Guests rave about the wood-fired pizzas and craft cocktails. And the laid-back vibe wins us over every time. Kick back under the umbrellas, share a few bites with your pup, and enjoy the Michigan sunshine.

Sip Wine at Hickory Creek Winery

Sunny days, blue skies, and a glass of wine — that’s what wine season feels like in Southwest Michigan. Hickory Creek Winery is one of our favorite spots for guests looking to unwind.

The tasting room is inviting, and the peaceful setting is perfect for a slow afternoon. You can bring your dog to relax while you swirl, sip, and savor. It specializes in European-style wines using local grapes from the Lake Michigan Shore AVA.

Small-batch wines, kind staff, and quiet surroundings make this a must-visit. Pack a picnic, grab a flight, and enjoy the charm of Hickory Creek.

Visit Bark Park

Need a dog park near New Buffalo? A spot where your pup can let loose? Head to the Bark Park at Creek Ridge County Park — one of the most loved dog-friendly places. It’s a short drive from our inn and fully fenced.

This park is also a hit with dogs of all sizes. They can run, sniff, and play off-leash. There are agility features, shaded benches, and trails.

Separate areas cater to large and small dogs. There’s shade for a breather after energetic play. Wrap up your visit by walking through the wooded paths or resting beneath the trees.

Shop Downtown St. Joseph

Downtown St. Joe blends lakeside charm with local energy. Tree-lined streets and welcoming shop owners make it a pleasure to explore. Many shops leave out water bowls and offer treats for furry friends. FuzzyButz Pet Bakery and St. Joe Wine Shoppe are two must-visit spots.

Stroll the bluff, grab an ice cream or a coffee, and browse pet-friendly shops. The downtown is walkable and full of small-town character. You’ll leave with keepsakes, smiles, and maybe something special for your pup.

Friendship Botanic Gardens is a quiet, dog-welcoming retreat. Perfect for a relaxed afternoon stroll, the gardens are a peaceful setting. Think: winding paths, soft streams, and vibrant blooms. The grounds span 105 acres and include over 3.5 miles of paved and wooded trails.

Bring your leashed dog to explore the entire garden with you and a favorite drink for hydration. We love how uncrowded it feels. You can meander at your own pace and soak in the beauty together.
