Epic Dog-Friendly Hiking From Union Pier to Indiana Dunes

We know how much joy a good hike can bring, especially when your dog joins the adventure. And we love pointing you toward the best dog-friendly hiking trails in Southwest Michigan.

You’ll find wide trails, shady loops, and breezy lake views. Each one is perfect for stretching legs and sniffing around. Some wind through peaceful forests. Others follow the water’s edge. Every trail offers a fresh way to explore nature together.

We’ve gathered our favorite dog-friendly trails in Harbor Country, just a short drive from the inn. So grab the leash, pack some water, and get ready to make tail-wagging memories.

Merritt Family & Pond Loop

This easy 0.8-mile loop is just a quick hop from the inn — perfect for short outings. You’ll follow a flat, wooded path around peaceful, tree-lined Merritt Pond. It’s a calm, quick stroll that usually takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.

Winter hikes here are as lovely, especially with snowshoes or cross-country skis. Want to go a little farther? Head right into the Younger Family Preserve Loop next door. Dogs are welcome; keep that leash handy. It’s a great little spot to enjoy Southwest Michigan’s natural side.

Glassman Park Trail

Glassman Park has a scenic loop just 10 minutes from the inn in New Buffalo. This wooded trail follows the Galien River. It features a footbridge that your pup is sure to enjoy. The 0.4-mile out-and-back trail near Union Pier is mostly flat and shaded, great for a relaxed morning or afternoon walk.

You’ll find benches along the way for quick breaks and water stops. Dogs are welcome on leashes, and trash cans are provided for your convenience. It’s a quiet, lovely place to slow down and enjoy the outdoors together.

Warren Woods State Park

Warren Woods State Park is one of our favorite dog-friendly hiking spots in Harbor Country. The shady trail winds through towering trees and follows the Galien River. The peaceful trail translates Warren Woods State Park into pure Michigan magic. It’s a 1-mile hiking trail that leads over a bridge. You’ll have a scenic overlook of the river, and it’s great for stretching your legs.

You’ll hear birds, rustling leaves, and maybe a happy bark or two along the trail. There are no restrooms here, so plan ahead. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the peaceful atmosphere makes every step worthwhile.

Warren Dunes State Park allows more hiking on the actual dunes than the Indiana Dunes National Park. It even has an official dog park for pups to enjoy some off-leash time.

West Beach Trails – Indiana Dunes National Park

West Beach Trails bring sandy dunes, tall grasses, and lake views that your pup will adore. This loop trail system spans about 3.5 miles, with shady woods and breezy overlooks. You’ll climb some stairs, but Lake Michigan’s views make it all worthwhile.

It gets hot in summer, so bring water and hit the trail early. Dogs are welcome on leash. West Beach is one of our favorites. We love the big skies and beachy vibes you’ll find here.

Cowles Bog Trail – Indiana Dunes National Park

Cowles Bog Trail packs a lot of beauty into one hike, and dogs are welcome on leash. The entire loop spans 4.7 miles, traversing wetlands, wooded ridges, and sandy dunes. You’ll pass wildflowers, tall grasses, and lake views that make the climb worth every step.

Some sections are steep, so bring good shoes and plenty of water for you and your pup. Cowles Bog Trail is another go-to spot when we’re up for some adventure. It’s a dog-friendly hiking gem near the lake.
