Looking for cozy things to do in winter? Join us at Goldberry Woods for snowshoeing, local bites, and peaceful nights surrounded by nature.
When the first snowflakes fall, we start planning our favorite things to do in winter. It’s time to greet this enchanting season the right way — immersed in nature and full of adventure.
Snow blankets everything. Our woods transform into a quiet winter wonderland that reminds us of a Norman Rockwell painting. The river trickles, pine aroma fills the air, and wood smoke curls into the sky. It’s a peaceful change from the city’s constant buzz.
Winter here feels like a secret we get to share with nature. We snowshoe through the woods, crunching softly as we go. Sometimes, we sled down the dunes, laughing until our cheeks sting. Yes, even adults can still enjoy sledding — and you should. On other days, we curl by the fire and let time drift away while the snow falls outside.
Before diving into the itinerary, take a breath and imagine the stillness of snow settling around you. Now, let’s plan how to fill your stay with cozy adventures, local flavors, and winter magic.
Day 1: Arrival & Cozy Beginnings
The hush that follows the first snow calls out to us. Guests often arrive as the flakes begin to fall. Their breath fogs in the chill before they step into warmth. There’s something special about this moment when city noise fades and the soft crackle of a fireplace takes its place.
Arrival
Arrive at Goldberry Woods and settle into your cozy room, where even the beds are nature-inspired. Wander through Union Pier’s antique shops, hunting for treasures and holiday finds. Every store feels personal, and every discovery feels like it was waiting just for you.
Back at the inn, light your fireplace, pour a glass of local wine, and let the stillness take hold. Winter promises this rhythm that’s slow, calm, and deeply comforting.
Evening
Dinner is a short walk away at Timothy’s Restaurant. The focus is on global cuisine and fresh fish, with Asian fusion flavors. Their off-season specials, like 8 for $18 or their weekly lobster night, always surprise our guests. Sometimes, we linger longer than planned, swapping stories over dessert. Eric loves their Rat Pack cocktail, and Julie counters with their Clearly Not the Rat Pack.
If you’re not ready to turn in, stop by Sonny D’s for trivia or live music. Or visit The False Front, our friends Joe and Emma’s place. It’s a New York–style deli by day and a funky cocktail bar by night. They mix up creative drinks that never disappoint and a HUGE selection of Irish whiskey..
We always look forward to evenings at Journeyman Distillery, too. It’s where great food, organic craft spirits, and laughter come together. Wander over for the perfect date night and bring home one of their signature bottles.
End your night fireside in your room or cottage. Watch the snow drift past the window. It’s the perfect start to your Goldberry Woods stay.
Day 2: Winter Adventures & Local Flavors
We enjoy waking up to sunlight glinting off fresh snow, the kind that makes you grab your boots without thinking twice. These mornings remind us why we love winter. The season is filled with crisp air, rosy cheeks, and simple joy waiting just outside your door.
Morning
Start your morning with a freshly made breakfast featuring fruits and veggies from our onsite organic farm. Then bundling up for a day outdoors. Goldberry shines even in the winter, where you will taste super creative preserves and compotes. Here are a few guest-favorite ways to play outside:
- Borrow our snowshoes and explore our wooded trails.
- Glide across the ice at Judy’s Motel Rink or the St. Joseph Ice Arena.
- Take in dazzling lights at the St. Joe Ice Festival and Fernwood Botanical Garden.
Warren Woods State Park is a fantastic place to explore winter trails. Enter from Warren Woods Road and park near the Primeval Forest sign.
Afternoon
Julie and Eric love sledding and never miss a chance to rocket down a dune. It’s exhilarating! Visit Warren Dunes State Park for the area’s best hill. See if you can climb up more than once! Or try Indiana Dunes National Park, where one dune opens for sledding each winter. Goldberry Woods even has sleds you can borrow.
Each adventure transforms winter into something unforgettable and undeniably fun. On snow-free days, take advantage of the opportunity to hike our scenic trails or discover the charm of nearby local trails.
Evening
Catch live music or an open mic night at The Acorn Theater, an intimate venue with a full bar.
Wrap up the night with a cider flight at Peat’s Cider Social. This revived bowling alley keeps its vintage scoring machines and plenty of charm. The cider flight ranges from sweet to barnyard tart. Julie’s favorite is the chamomile-infused cider. Don’t be shy, mingle with the locals! Bring your own food and stay awhile.
As the day fades, you’ll feel the shift — the excitement of adventure giving way to the quiet calm of evening. It’s the perfect rhythm before tomorrow’s slower pace.

Winter is a favorite season for elopements
Day 3: Classic Favorites & Romantic Moments
We always slow down on this day. It’s when time stretches, the world quiets, and love feels a little closer. This is the part of your stay you’ll hold onto long after the snow melts.
Morning
After two days of adventure and your farm-to-table breakfast, slow things down and enjoy time together. Add a romance package when you book your stay and spend the morning unwinding right here at Goldberry Woods:
- Soak in your oversized tub.
- Swim in our indoor heated pool or relax in the hot tub.
- Enjoy a one-on-one or couples ayurvedic bodywork/massage in your room.
- Challenge your sweetheart to ping pong, pool, or vintage arcade games in the barn.
- Curl up by your in-room fireplace with a good book.
Afternoon
After checking out, enjoy one last adventure before heading home. Head out for a matinee at Vickers Theater, a vintage cinema in Three Oaks. It shows indie films, old favorites, and new releases. The owner often shares behind-the-scenes stories that make every show memorable.
Speaking of memories, we talk about love a lot this time of year. There’s something about winter that makes forever feel close. It’s our favorite season for couples eloping at Goldberry Woods. Snowy backdrops, warm hearts, and simple beauty make every ceremony magical.
Plan Your Winter Getaway
The snow will fall again, and we’re lighting the fireplaces for another cozy season. These are the moments we wait for — the calm, the laughter, and the warmth that fills every room.
Winter here is personal. It’s also ideal for a luxurious romantic getaway. Every morning starts with a farm-fresh breakfast, and every night ends in comfort.
The best things to do in winter start here in our woods and by the fire. Book your stay and write your own story in the snow and starlight. Choose between a room at our Inn or an ultra-private cottage with your own kitchen.
