Summer mornings at Goldberry Woods are a nature-lover’s paradise. If you’re into birding photography, this is the place to be. Our gardens, winding nature trails, and tree canopies are home to various feathered friends.

Grab your camera, lace up your boots, and step outside. Our inn sits in the heart of Union Pier. So, it’s the perfect base for exploring Harbor Country. Cardinals, hawks, woodpeckers — you never know what might be waiting beyond the trees.

And the best part? You don’t have to leave the property. We’re passionate local experts with science backgrounds. And we’re happy to help personalize your adventure on and around the property. Birding isn’t just a hobby; it’s an adventure waiting for you.

Walk the Trails Camera-Ready

Grab your camera and step outside — our trails are calling. Our property sits on 30 acres of lush gardens, towering trees, and winding nature trails. Here, you’re not just walking but exploring a living canvas.

Take your time, wander slowly, and listen. The leaves rustle, or a distant hawk calls. You never know what you’ll find around the bend. And the best part? These trails are right here on our property. So there’s no need to drive, and you don’t need to rush. Just step outside and start exploring.

Catch Morning Light and Wings

Early mornings on our property are the perfect time for birding photography. Our gardens and winding nature trails are alive with activity.

If you’re hoping to spot hawks, timing is key. These majestic birds of prey are most active between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.. When the sun warms the air, the thermal currents help them soar effortlessly. On windier days, you might catch them earlier. They ride the thermals and scan the ground below.

Grab your camera, find a comfortable spot, and let nature come to you. If you’re unsure where to begin, just ask. We’re always here to share our favorite birdwatching spots on the property.

Zoom In on Summer Residents

Summer residents bring our gardens and woods to life! Watch for the brilliant flashes of indigo buntings and the cheerful melodies of American goldfinches.

Since 2019, we’ve been nurturing and releasing Northern Bobwhite Quail on our property. These native ground birds nearly went extinct in Southwest Michigan. They’re incredible at controlling tick populations. And spotting one is a treat! They’re a testament to our commitment to preserving the local ecosystem.

Get Low, Stay Quiet, Snap Often

The best shots in birding photography come when you’re almost invisible. Getting low gives you a whole new perspective. You’re eye-level with ground feeders like quail and sparrows. Plus, it’s less intimidating for birds.

Staying quiet is just as important. Move slowly, watch your step, and avoid sudden movements. You want to be part of the scenery, not a disruption. That’s when you get those candid shots — wings spread in flight, feathers ruffled by the breeze.

And don’t be shy about snapping often. The more you shoot, the better your chances of capturing that perfect moment. Sometimes the best shot happens in a blink, and you don’t want to miss it.

Bring the Right Gear for the Shot

Having the right gear makes all the difference. A good zoom lens is a must to capture the best shots. Birds aren’t always close, and you want to capture details. Think: feathers, eyes, and wings in motion. A 300mm lens is sufficient, especially for larger birds like herons and egrets.

Have you considered a sturdy tripod? It’s an essential tool for birding photography enthusiasts. A good tripod provides stability, enhances image quality, and eases physical strain. It also keeps your shots steady, especially when you zoom in.

Bring an extra battery and memory card. Nothing kills the moment like spotting the perfect shot and running out of space or power.

Refuel with a Farm-Fresh Breakfast

All that time on the trails builds up an appetite. Luckily, you won’t have to go far to find the perfect meal. Each morning at our inn, we serve a farm-to-table dining experience celebrating  Harbor Country’s best. Fresh eggs, homemade bread, and seasonal veggies are just the beginning.

Much of what you find on your plate comes straight from our gardens. It’s picked just steps from your room. You can practically taste the sunshine in every bite.

Even better? You can enjoy breakfast on our porch. Or pack it up for a picnic along the trails. Breakfast isn’t just a meal — it’s part of the Goldberry Woods adventure.
